Dorothy Gabori was born in 1959 and speaks Kayardild language. She is a Kaiadilt woman from Dulkawalne, Bentinck Island who creates vibrant artworks using watercolour, acrylic paint and brightly coloured felt wool.

Dorothy often collaborates with her sister Amanda Gabori. Inspired by Bentinck Island her ancestral homeland in Queensland’s Gulf of Carpentaria, she was first encouraged to paint by her mother, Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori (c.1924-2015), one of Australia’s most celebrated contemporary artists.

Dorothy works with contemporary materials in order to engage audiences with the stories and cultural practices of her people. As she explains:

My father was Pat Gabori, he was a hunter, a hard working old fella. We used to go bush with our parents who taught us a lot about our homelands both Bentinck Island and Sweers Island.
