Amanda Jane Gabori was born on Mornington Island in 1966 and speaks Kayardild language. She is a Kaiadilt woman from Dulkawalne, Bentinck Island who creates vibrant paintings on canvas and paper using acrylic paint.
Amanda is the youngest daughter of Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori (c.1924-2015), one of Australia’s most celebrated contemporary artists. Working from the art centre on Mornington Island, she often collaborates with her sister Dorothy Gabori. Amanda was encouraged to paint from an early age, mainly by watching her mother. She explains,
I started painting when I was just sitting at home and wanted to go up and join my Mum, Sally Gabori, painting as she was really enjoying it. I paint my Country on Bentinck Island and Dibirdibi which is my language name and totem given to me by my Father.
