Artist Showcase | Alick Tipoti

Clan groups: Maluyligal, Zenadh-Kes
Language group: Kala Lagaw Ya

Alick (Zugub) Tipoti was born in 1975 and is from Badu Island, Torres Strait. Alick’s art practice includes painting, linocuts and mask making.

Alick’s works detail complex stories about the history and culture of his people. His practice also includes the performance of traditional songs, chants and dances, often concurrently with his exhibited artworks. He is one of a very few who speaks his language fluently.

Alick is a proud and respected role model for a generation of younger Torres Strait Islander artists. His works are represented in major collections in Australia and overseas, and he has exhibited extensively. In 2015 the Cairns Art Gallery presented a major exhibition of his work entitled Alick Tipoti: Zugubal: Ancestral Spirits.

He is represented by Australian Art Print Network, Sydney, and Badu Arts Centre, Torres Strait.
