Artist Showcase | Janet Fieldhouse

Clan groups: Moa Island, Hammond Island, Prince of Wales Island, Badu Island and Darnley Island
Language groups: Kalaw Lagaw Ya/Meriam Mir

Janet Fieldhouse was born in Cairns, Queensland, in 1971. She is an established artist who is nationally recognised for her ceramic and textile works.

Through her arts practice, Janet maintains strong cultural connections with, and a deep understanding of, traditional practices and cultural knowledge. She reinterprets traditional ways to define what it means to be a Torres Strait Islander woman today. Her works celebrate traditions and stories of navigation, of living off the sea and land, and of women’s traditional practices, including weaving body adornments used for ceremony.

Janet has exhibited extensively, and her work is held in major public collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane; and Cairns Art Gallery, Queensland.
