Artist Showcase | Carl Fourmile

Clan group: Gimuy Walubara Yidinji
Language group: Yidinyi

Carl Fourmile lives and work in Cairns, Queensland. He is a cultural performer, practitioner, and local leader in Indigenous arts. Carl has strong roots in dance, lore, and is a passionate mentor and teacher.

Carl has curated numerous events and exhibitions and most recently was a participating artist in the Cairns Art Gallery’s 2021 exhibition RITUAL: the past in the present that explored relationships between contemporary Australian Indigenous art and ritual within the global context of transcultural ritual practices in the Asia Pacific region.

Carl’s work in the RITUAL exhibition, Wunjuu Bayal, depicted people sitting around a fire pit during a smoking ceremony and was a symbolic acknowledgement of the importance of fire, smoke and ceremony to the Yidinji and other First Nations people of Australia. The clap sticks used in ritual practices were inscribed with traditional clan markings and designs unique to the Yidinji people.
