Wanda Gibson was born in Woorabinda, Queensland, in 1946 and is a fluent Guugu Yimithirr speaker. Her family were forcibly moved from Cape Bedford, Queensland, to the Woorabinda Settlement, west of Rockhampton, during WW II. After the war her family were moved back to the new Indigenous settlement of Hope Vale, in Far North Queensland.
Wanda is a member of Gamba Gamba, the senior women’s group at the art centre. Through her paintings, prints and weaving, Wanda passes on knowledge about culture and traditional materials. Her work is regularly exhibited in and around Cairns and Cooktown and is represented in the collections of the National Museum of Australia, Canberra, and the Cairns Art Gallery, Queensland.
She is represented by the HopeVale Arts & Cultural Centre, Queensland.
