Toby Cedar was born in Dampier, WA, in 1978. He went to school in Port Hedland and later in life he moved to Queensland. He now lives and works in Maitland, NSW.
Toby is a sculptor whose works, including elaborate headdresses, are heavily influenced by his Torres Strait Islander culture and totems. His works are inspired by the many stories passed down to him by his Elders. Through his arts practice he explores how traditional Torres strait Islander ceremony and introduced western religions intersect and co-exist.
In 2021 Toby was a finalist in the Telstra NATSIAA Art Awards, Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Darwin. His work is held in numerous private and public gallery collections.
