Sonya Creek was born in 1971 and is a saltwater and freshwater woman from the Shipton Flat area, south of Cooktown. She lives and works in the Cape York community of Wujal Wujal and is an active member of the Bana Yirriji Art Centre.

Sonya works across a range of media including acrylic on canvas, silk batik, screen-printing and jewellery. Her artworks feature many of the animals that live in the waterways and surrounding lands on her Country, including Kunjuri (Cassowary), Dawa Dawa (Magpie Geese), Kudi (Barramundi) and Mukirr (Mud Muscles). She is passionate about caring for Country and sharing traditional stories that are passed down from one generation to the next.

Sonya has been represented in several group exhibitions, including The Endeavour Voyage: The Untold Stories of Cook and the First Australians 2020 at the National Museum of Australia, Canberra. In 2022 she received a Cairns Art Gallery Fellowship Award sponsored by the Cairns RSL Club and the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair Emerging Artist Award.

She is represented by Bana Yirriji Art Centre, Queensland
